Everyone Loves an Orgasm
By Kailash Heron
This past Tuesday the St. Lawrence community welcomed Sex Educators Conor Timmons and Dorion Solot to Eben Holden in order to unravel the mysterious subject of the Female Orgasm. The event was organized by Cate Rosen ’16 as part of Body Beautiful Week, and sponsored by SLU Advocates, ACE and SAGA. The workshop was open to all because, as one audience member proclaimed “guys have questions too.” Themes of the evening’s discussions centered around sex positivity and general awareness and education for issues of female sexuality.
Many members of the audience shared stories of their own experiences involving sex education and the lack of resources otherwise available to enhance our understanding of such a taboo subject in American society. Zoe Kagan ’17 relayed her own experiences involving a complete absence of sex-education at her public high school in the south, concluding that she is “thankful for the lovely progressive campus,” here at SLU.
The evening’s discussion also highlighted the message that “porn is entertainment, not educational,” with special emphasis on demystifying female sexuality and debunking many of the myths and inaccuracies, which surround. Members of the audience shared stories of reclaiming their own sexuality with one audience member sharing her advice: “if something doesn’t work for you, don’t give up.”
The Female Orgasm event, which was also hosted on campus last year, is one of the most popular college sex education programs across the United States. After the event, audience members unanimously appreciated the opportunity to discuss female sexuality in such an open and welcoming environment. The journey does not end here, for there are many resources available to those interested in learning more on campus. SLU Advocates, The Women’s Resource Center and SAGA all host events and meetings regularly on campus. For now, it’s safe to say that the big O was a big success.
