The SLU-Canton Bar Tour took place this past Tuesday evening, April 16. It consisted of four stops: PUB 56, County Seat Restaurant and Bar, Sylvia’s and The Hoot Owl. The event was free for SLU students over 21.
Free food, including pizza, wings, and vegetarian options were provided at three of the four stops along the way, as well as a bus service between the different bars.
Bar Crawl Attendee Julian d’Almeida Santos ’20 explained that, “[Tuesday’s] pub crawl was a great way for the St. Lawrence community to get together and enjoy the local bar scene. I especially loved meeting new friends and playing foosball.” The SLU-Canton Bar Tour used to be a major tradition at St. Lawrence. Placido Ramallo ’21, Thelomathesian Society President, brought it back when he was Canton Community Outreach Chair this past fall, and asked the incoming Canton Community Outreach Committee to continue it. “We were expecting 80 students, and we ended up getting around 120. It was really great seeing how excited students were for the Tour. We were on the busses and someone started the chant ‘Hey, St. Lawrence!’ and the entire bus yelled it back.”
“The committee worked really hard setting it up, and we’re really grateful for all the help from the bars,” said Canton Community Outreach Chair, Chris Denham ’21. “This event helped to get SLU students out into local restaurants and bars and spread information about what Canton has to offer.
“The businesses who took part in the tour provide jobs and economic growth to Canton and the bar tour is one way we can bring St. Lawrence and the Canton community together,” added Denham.
“The spring 2019 Bar Tour was overall a huge success,” Elizabeth Catherwood ’20 noted. “We had almost twice the number of people we expected, which means that next semester we will expand the amount of tee shirts and busses. The Bar Tour is a great way to connect students to the community, promote local businesses and provide a safe and fun way for 21+ students to drink” Catherwood added: “The Canton Community Outreach Committee, a subcommittee of The Thelomathesian Society, was ecstatic about the turnout and looks forward to continuing and expanding this fun tradition! If you missed this one, keep a look out next fall.”
