Meet The Hill News Fall 2020 Staff!

Editor-in-Chief Chris Denham: Originally from Schenectady, New York, Chris is a senior majoring in English and Government and minoring in Education Studies.  He lives in the Arts Annex and plays the keys.  Chris started as a staff writer Freshman year and has been with The Hill News ever since.  Chris likes to hike and ski in his spare time, and is currently trying to finish the New York 46 high peaks.  He is working on a political drama novel with his advisor Dr. Paul Graham.  After college, Chris hopes to pursue politics and journalism at Graduate School.

Managing Editor Margaret Dener: Margaret, from Newburyport, Massachusetts, is a Government major and English minor. She has been writing for The Hill since her freshman year. On campus, Margaret is involved with SLU Democrats, Planned Parenthood Generation Action, and is a trained Advocate. She is a major swiftie and loves to constantly remind her roommate of that. In her free time, Margaret FaceTimes her dog Gizmo regularly.

Managing Editor Thao Nguyen: Thao Nguyen ’22 is the Managing Digital Editor for the Hill News. Thao is an English and Neuroscience double major from Hanoi, Vietnam. This is her first year as a Managing Digital Editor for the Hill after a year working with the Digital team. Outside of THN, she is the Editor-in-Chief of the Laurentian Magazine, and is a member of Common Ground Connections and I-House. After the 5-month long quarantine in Maine, now Thao can cook any Korean and Vietnamese dishes you can think of.

Sports Editor Olivia Kremer: From Pomfret, Connecticut, Olivia is a current senior here at St. Lawrence. With a major in History and a minor in Sports Studies, her plan after she graduates in the spring, is to work in sports statistics and broadcasting. Olivia has been with the Hill News since her Junior year, where she was introduced as a staff writer. In her spare time, she is a member of the Women’s Golf program and is working on an internship with the Athletics Department.

Chief Copy Editor Mike Gagliardi: Mike is Chief Copy Editor of The Hill News and Editor-in-Chief of The Underground. A senior, he majors in Philosophy and History and writes searing political commentary. His humble origins in Canton betray his love of reading, writing and rabble-rousing. He is a talented literary pugilist who fears nor spares anyone. Perhaps a chef at heart, Mike loves to stir the pot, but has been known to spill the tea. 

Features Editor Delaney Smith: Delaney is a Global Studies Major with a concentration in Middle Eastern relations and environmental studies. After working for two non-profits through AmeriCorps, she aspires to a career of ethical international advocacy work.  Delaney loves adventure and travel; she is an avid hiker/skier, and is currently enrolled to study abroad in Jordan this Spring. While she is away, she will miss her three goats and golden retriever back home in Jay Peak, VT. 

News Editor Tina Luchetta: Tina is a junior majoring in History and minoring in Creative Writing and African Studies. She lives in the Java House, and pre pandemic days you could catch her in the venue with some funky, dancing pants and glitter on her face. She also enjoys tap dancing. While not very good, she sure does have a lot of heart. Her favorite film is Frances Ha and she enjoys listening to Joan Baez, but only in warm lighting. This summer Tina completed a SLU Fellowship that focused on female hip hop artists in Senegal. 

News Editor Madi Amico: Madi is a junior double majoring in English with focus in Creative Writing and Communications. On campus, she is a member of the Women’s Volleyball Team and works as an Admissions Ambassador. This summer, she was a HR and Communications intern for Euler Hermes, a trade credit insurance company. Madi loves to travel, read and eat really delicious food. Her favorite magazine is Vogue, which she also up-cycles into collages by cutting up the images and creating new art! She is enrolled to study abroad in Rome in the Spring. In her free time, she loves to sit on the quad and soak up the sun. 

Opinions Editor Alexandra Hill: Alexandra is a sophomore majoring in Math and English, and minoring in French, Economics, Statistics. Around campus, she works as a Community Assistant and as a tutor for both the PQRC and the Peer Tutor Program; she is also Managing/Production Editor for The Laurentian Magazine, Lieutenant Governor of Circle K, and Vice President of Service for APO. Originally from Los Angeles, California, she loves the winter wonderland that is the North Country and can consistently be seen ill-prepared for the freezing weather but enjoying the cold nonetheless. 

Photography Editor Elizabeth Bascom: Elizabeth is a junior majoring in Studio Art and minoring in Gender. Elizabeth also works part time taking care of a thirteen-year-old girl with autism. She lives off campus and has four wonderful dogs named, Bailey, Charlie, KC and Finn. When not doing school work, working, or being at the paper she enjoys watching movies and taking photos of the beautiful NoCo. 

A&E Editor Ibadat Javed: Ibadat is a junior, double majoring in Creative Writing and PCA, and minoring in Sports Studies and Exercise. She is a member of the tennis team, an Orientation Leader, joined the Hill as a staff writer during her sophomore year, and works at the Student Mail Center (so come say hi the next time you have a package!) Hailing from Dallas, TX, Ibby’s main hobby is regularly complaining about the NoCo Winters. Aside from that, she enjoys sitting at the Pub for too many hours a day, writing poetry and going on the occasional run. 

Digital Editor Hannah Finley: Hannah is a junior, completing a combined major of English and Spanish. On campus, Hannah is a member of the Java House, Wind Ensemble, Improv Lab, and Advocates. Last year she participated in an internship with North Country Public Radio and hopes to pursue a career in journalism. Hannah enjoys dancing in the chapel with friends (pre Covid-19), thrift shopping, and making music. Although Hannah is studying from home in Watertown, NY, she has still found ways to connect with campus whether it be with friends or by contributing to The Hill News.


Digital Editor Jenny L’Hommedieu: Jenny is a sophomore, who is currently undeclared in her major. This is her first year working with The Hill News and is eager to learn as much as she can. Jenny is also a member of the Field Hockey team and loves hanging outdoors with her friends and teammates. Jenny lives in Columbus, Ohio and loves to watch the Buckeyes, Browns, Cavs, and Indians. When not watching sports games, she loves to chow some food at the pub or Dana, but her current favorite that she won’t stop talking about is the Mac and Cheese bites found at Pub 56.
