A Look Into Greek Life Spring Recruitment on St Lawrence’s Campus
Once again, sororities and fraternities across campus opened up their doors to potential new members as they geared up for spring Greek Life recruitment.
Sophomores and juniors, who met the entry requirements for recruitment, were invited to the Dean Formal Lounge last Friday to partake in Greek 101 – a guide to the recruitment process here at St. Lawrence.
This event provides students with all of the important information concerning our Greek organizations. House tours and other events were held this week at two of the four sororities: Chi Omega and Kappa Kappa Gamma, as well as both of the fraternities, Alpha Tau Omega and Beta Theta Pi.
Women attended each house that they were interested in on Tuesday for house tours, where potential members can get a feel for each respective house, and then visited again on Thursday to learn more about each sorority’s philanthropy.
Throughout the week, men have attended events with brothers from each fraternity, such as dinner at Dana and a poker night.
Each house also gave house tours. Saturday February 3, all going through recruitment will find out whether they received a bid from their desired house.
While Greek Life may not be for everyone, each house encourages all eligible members to visit the houses and see what it’s really like.
Tyler Schmalz ’20 of Beta Theta Pi stated, “The recruitment process is always exciting. Being able to see a group of students so motivated and enthusiastic to rush Greek life is so special. It’s also great to meet a group of students and see them interact with some people they’ve never had the opportunity to meet. It’s super fun both for the fraternity and for the students rushing!”
“Rush week is such a great time in that there is no pressure to join either organization,” stated Alpha Tau Omega president, Liam Blake ’19. “It’s solely based on meeting people and having fun with new and old friends.”
While recruitment may be over for this semester, current eligible freshmen and sophomores (classes of ’21 and ’20, respectively), mark your calendars for Greek 100 and house tours at the end of this semester, and Greek 101 and the beginning of formal recruitment this upcoming fall!
Recruitment Chair of Chi Omega, Katie Buck ’20 encourages everyone to attend future events and thanks everyone for their participation this week. “There are many misconceptions people have about Greek Life. However, if you give it a chance you may realize how easily you can find a home away from home.”
