Fall Sports Week One Recap: Saints Open Competition After Nearly 600 Days Without Games

0

St. Lawrence University fall varsity sports had their first games this week after not competing for nearly 600 days. For teams playing at home, the excitement was matched on and off the fields. Students lined the fences of Sandy McAllister Field, North Country Field and Appleton D. Golf Course to cheer on the Saints.  For those on the road, they were happy to be competing against those not from their own team.

Both men’s and women’s cross country had success on the road this weekend at the Cardinal Classic at Plattsburg State. According to the weekend press release, Billie McClosky on the women’s team led the Saints to victory, winning the meet at 21 points. For the men, first-year Timothy Boyce helped the saints to a perfect score of 15 points.

On the golf course, the men’s team finished second overall in the St. Lawrence Invitational on Saturday. Senior William Wilson placed third overall in the tournament. First-year Mary Grace McCann led the women on the golf course this weekend, finishing 17th overall.

Men’s soccer opened with a successful season on Sandy McAllister Field, with victories over Buffalo State and SUNY Geneseo. Senior Bobby Reynolds scored a goal in each game, the only goal of the matchup against Geneseo.

Senior captain Quinn Houseman said it was a good way for them to start their season.  “We played hard and with heart,” he said. “As a team we still have a lot to work on, but these first two games were a good steppingstone for the rest of the season.”

Women’s soccer is also coming off a win streak, with victories over SUNY Potsdam, Stevens, and New England College. Senior Duun Cocozza O’Hara ended the week of games with three goals and two assists for the Saints. Junior Tyler Potter had two goals for the Saints this weekend.

Field Hockey collected two wins and a loss. The Saints dominated Morrisville State and SUNY Oneonta, with scores of 6-0 and 5-1 respectively. Their first loss of the season came from New Paltz, who held the saints 1-0. Senior Maggie Green scored a pair of goals over Oneonta.

Volleyball had a tough weekend on the road. They lost all four games at SUNY Cortland. The Saints look to rebound this weekend for their home opener against SUNY Canton on Friday, Sept. 10.
