The Senior Editorial Staff Says Goodbye to the Hill
Veronica “Roni” Zabala, Features Editor: I have no idea what I’m doing after graduation, but my most recent interviewer said I was “a great writer,” and I can thank The Hill News for that! So thank you Hill News for looking great on my resume and giving me the experience to intern at NCPR as well. I’ll miss how no one ever seemed to care about this paper until a huge scandal happened, and then the Hill News and “How could YOU let this happen!?” was all anyone would talk about. Get more involved with us! I also will miss seeing professors and faculty reading the paper every Friday and thinking, “Oh god, I forgot real-life adults would be reading my weird horoscopes.” Tom Greene told me he really liked them though, so that’s all that matters to me. See you all in the Class of 2019 class notes section of the university magazine!
“Noted Englishman” Robert Davies, Managing Editor: Working for The Hill News has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. A chance encounter in the Student Center first got me involved, and I’ve loved it ever since. For those of you who will be here next year, take advantage of the opportunity to write! We are very lucky to have a school newspaper, so don’t let it die! I am very grateful to have been a part of it for the past three years, and I have full confidence in the future of The Hill News.
Bones (Marin) Murphy, Sports Editor: It’s been a really great experience working for the school paper and I hope to pass on this wonderful opportunity to upcoming Laurentians. I feel extremely blessed to have the new friends I have in my life because of this experience and I wish the best for the paper and everyone behind it in the future.
Matt Thibault, Opinions Editor: It’s been the longest short four years of my life. That doesn’t make sense, but it doesn’t matter because it means a lot to me, and I don’t particularly care what you think. I joke, of course, but a similar sentiment developed as a result of writing opinion pieces for the past four years. I care what people think, but I don’t care what people think about what I think. Confused? Good. That’s the first part of learning. Being someone who’s vocal about what they believe in while being cavalier about what people think of you is the first step in becoming the person that you want to be. The St. Lawrence experience gets memed on a lot, but I don’t really see another place in my mind that teaches us to think as critically as we do–we’re surrounded by a contingent of over 2,000 highly intelligent people who are ready to challenge us and help us grow. Don’t throw that away. If anything, my time at The Hill News, and at St. Lawrence, has taught me to embrace debate and grow from it. Thanks for everything, everyone.
David Kunin, Managing Editor: Being a part of The Hill News has been an experience that I wouldn’t change for anything. By a stroke of luck, I made it into Juraj’s journalism class my freshman year and realized I had a serious passion for writing. It’s been a wild year full of meetings, controversy and late nights, but I’m thankful for The Hill News for giving me this opportunity to further my passion. The Hill News is written by students for students. It is accessible to everybody and we always welcome the input of students, faculty and alumni. If you’re interested in writing, write. If you have an opinion, share it. I can’t stress this enough.
