Boot N’ Paddle: Trivia Time
Did you know that your local OC is the second oldest Outing Club in the nation? That’s a pretty neat fact! Indeed, we have a long history of professional experience. Back in ’86, for example, the OC and UVM co-hosted a panel on “Motivation in the Outdoors.” Several restaurants in Burlington sell “Yerba Mate,” which is an OC sponsor. OC member Ryan Schlosser ’21 was a “Yerba Ambassador” and recently hiked the Appalachian Trail.
Did you know that Peak Weekend used to be called “Peak Sensation?” The Catamount Lodge once served as a post-Peak Weekend hangout where hiking stories were swapped. Speaking of catamounts, there are more mountain lions in the Adirondacks than you probably realize. There is also a positive correlation (R=0.81) between the number of people killed from venomous spiders every year and the amount of letters in the winning Scripps Spelling Bee word. In 2009 the word was “Laodicean.” OC member Logan Hagerty ’21 won his spelling bee (twice!) in middle school.
OC member Ryan Heuss ’21 has been living in the Outing Club since his Sophomore year and went abroad to New Zealand last Spring. His favorite color is blue. Upstairs in 58 Park, we have a house bobcat and a house wolf. You can tell it’s a bobcat (and not a catamount) because of the way it is. Downstairs we have a moose. We recently added a beautiful mural to the Common Room; there is a lot of blue, which makes Ryan happy.
In 2017, your Phriendly Neighborhood OC was publicized in Powder Magazine. The OC has 14 members on campus, with a median age of 21 (that’s a heavily skewed right distribution). The very first Outing Club in the nation is the Dartmouth Outing Club. They have a book called: “Reaching that Peak” which covers their club history. It is listed on Amazon for…no, that can’t be right…$869.97?? Hold the phone – I’ve got a book to write!!
