St. Lawrence University Offers a Wide Variety of Community Based Learning Experiences in Canton
“Okay…” Bob Washo says. Like a stamp of approval on a job well done: Bob either mumbles or shouts that friendly affirmation with tick-like consistency. That phrase, like a classroom bell, marks a change: a happy transition from one farm task to the next. These tasks are performed at Little Grasse Food Works for my suite’s Community Based Learning engagement. Unlike the routine of class schedules, each day the farm presents us with a new goal and a new task that must be completed. Depending on the season, we pick green beans, move fencing, harvest potatoes, or split wood. Regardless, the two hours spent at the farm are relished: a welcomed break from the monotony of college routine.
As a current inhabitant of the CBL suite, I can give an honest account of the expectations and benefits required of this unique living arrangement. The CBL suite may at first glance seem like an easy way to live in the suites as a rising first-year or sophomore. And it is…sort of. The upsides are nearly irresistible. Imagine yourself, three of your friends, a sweet private bathroom, and a great (substance-free) party space. There are four rooms: two doubled-up bedrooms, a bathroom, and a main living space. Some less advertised benefits include: a beautiful sunrise view of the quad, direct access to Pub 56, and a complementary set of couch and chairs which will most likely outlive the Earth. It’s great.
The attractions are abounding, but the real question is: what’s the catch? Well, the “catch” is completely up to you. The CBL office allows you to choose from a variety of CBL locations like GardenShare, NYSARC Fitness, the Canton-Potsdam Hospital, and Planned Parenthood. You and your suitemates can engage with the community in a way that is the most constructive and interesting for you.
Once you’ve chosen a CBL engagement, you’ll be asked to complete a weekly/monthly report of your experiences through a medium of your choice (e.g. blog posts). In this report, you can talk about things you’ve learned, memorable experiences, or a general topic relating to your CBL engagement. This report encourages a personal recount of your CBL experience, and offers the chance for group reflection.
The CBL suite experience is a living arrangement like no other. You can live with your friends, interact with the local community in a personally relevant way, and learn while you do it. Seriously, apply by March 5th to the CBL office. You’ll get a sweet couch.
