I know, the timing for a “Mandalorian” reference may not be great, as season three of the “Baby Yoda” Disney+ vehicle came out six months ago and season four isn’t due out for another year or more. Meanwhile, Ahsoka just premiered on the streaming service last week.

But nonetheless, the headline works for the premise of this column, so I’m running with it.

On Sunday afternoon, you should have received an email in your SLU inbox from the Center for Career Excellence. Sophomores, juniors and seniors got a “Welcome back!” message, while first-years received one with a subject line that read “Pathways to Career Excellence: Your first newsletter from the CCE.”

Based on our internal metrics, a good chunk of you opened the email. That’s encouraging, because each week, the Pathways to Career Excellence newsletter is chock full of information about career resources and upcoming programs. These resources and programs can help you elevate your career readiness, whether you’re crafting a resume, networking with fellow Laurentians and employers, or gaining the confidence you need to knock an interview out of the park. But you can only take advantage of these opportunities if you know about them.

The start of a new semester is like New Year’s Day. It’s a good time to set goals and expectations for yourself. I hope you’ll use this opportunity to make the following resolution this semester: I will devote five minutes every week to reading the Pathways to Career Excellence newsletter.

It’s a small commitment, and incredibly easy to do. And I promise you those five minutes won’t be wasted. Find an event that interests you; register for it and invite a friend. Check out one of the resources you didn’t know about. And always know that if you have questions, you can talk to one of our career coaches. Make an appointment in Handshake or stop by our drop-in hours (11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on weekdays, Student Center 202 on Monday-Thursday, Time Out Café in Newell on Fridays).

Of course, you can also learn about our programming and resources here in our Career Corner column in The Hill News, but the space limitations of print mean that the Pathways newsletter is much more comprehensive.

Your directive this semester is clear. Spend at least five minutes each week reading Pathways to Career Excellence. Oh, and it wouldn’t hurt to read this column every week, too.
