Late nights have gotten a little more bawse as Lilly Singh joins the ranks of late-night television. Even if you don’t watch late-night television or are too busy out and about on your Saturday nights to care, Singh’s presence in this media is a huge step towards female empowerment, especially for fellow women of color.
Singh is a Canadian woman of Indian descent who has made her mark as a comedian, actress, author, and content creator, most notably on YouTube under the alias IISuperwomanII.
She got her start on the website back in 2011 where she created music videos, skits and advice around positivity and loving yourself. Since then, she has collaborated with many other celebrities such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Shay Mitchel, and Selena Gomez to name a few. Off the screen, she has started her own world tour called A Trip to Unicorn Island, founded the #GirlLove initiative as a means to break the cycle of girl on girl hate and to encourage women to build each other up, collaborated with Smashbox Cosmetics on her own shade of liquid lipstick, wrote her own book appropriately titled “How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life,” and garnered a fanbase of almost 15 million subscribers on YouTube. Needless to say, Singh has seemingly done it all.
In transitioning from YouTuber to late-night television host, Singh hopes to bring her relatable nature to the televised web. She understands that this is not only a huge step for her as a creator, but a huge step for women around the globe. As the first woman of color to receive her own late-night talk show on NBC, Singh has the opportunity to help pave a way for others who aspire to have their own show or to go against the white norm in media as a whole. Although late-night television tends to get political, Singh hopes to garner an environment that is lighthearted, funny, and positive – much like her content on YouTube. However, she does plan to talk about current events that pertain to her, such as women’s rights and reproduction rights. She also hopes to incorporate multiple facets of her identity such as her heritage of growing up in an Indian household and living in Canada.
Joining the ranks of Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, “A Little Late with Lilly Singh” has already premiered on NBC with guests such as Mindy Kaling, Kenan Thompson, and many more to come. “A Little Late with Lilly Singh” is live weeknights at 1:35 am on NBC. If you find a night where the mixers weren’t great or you need a little laugh after a stressful week, Lilly Singh can surely give you the positive vibes to make your night a little more fun.
