Saturday Night and a Song: A Review of the Laurentian Weekend Acapella Show

0

This past Saturday, I had the privilege of attending my first SLU acapella show – and let me just say, I was pleasantly surprised.

In retrospect, my expectations were lower than they should have been. I have only ever been to one other acapella concert in my life, and well… let’s just say it didn’t set the tone very well for a secondary viewing. Still, I should have known that anything run by SLUdents would be carried by their Laurentian passion.

From The Upbeats first song, I knew I was hooked. Although I know I’m biased as a  lover of “The Sweet Escape” by Gwen Stephanie, I still genuinely mean it. I was thoroughly impressed by the group’s coordination, versatility of range and of course Upbeat energy! I literally got chills during their performance of  “Water Under the Bridge” by Adele, if that gives you any indication of the level of talent I was lucky enough to be a witness to.

Of course, I was equally impressed by the second two acts of the night. In my personal opinion, the Slu Singing Singers had the most wholesome alumni spotlight and iconic opening song. As well as the prettiest outfits, obviously. Their feminine voices soured higher than the Chapel ceilings, and brought a higher pitch to the night for sure.

Lastly, the Singing Saints. Oh boy, so much to say here. I mean, you’ve gotta love a good Boy Band, so there were some automatic points won there. Also, 100 percent these guys won the award for most charismatic of the performances. I was a little confused as to why one of them was wearing a giant hat, but once I learned that it was a tradition I thought that part was pretty cool too. All in all, probably the best closer a girl could ask for!

Whether or not you agree with me on some of the nuances of this review, I hope that my take of Saturday night has been convincing enough that you show up the next time some of the more musical members of our student body waltz onto the Chapel stage.
