Things are a little stressful right now. Or a lot stressful, for me anyway. And one of my ways of escaping all the work I have to do and taking a moment for myself is by listening to music. Whether I’m lying in my bed or walking on a trail, my Spotify becomes my best friend and gets me out of the bubble of worry I’ve been stuck in. Depending on my mood, there are different songs and artists I put on, but here I have compiled some of the best self-care songs for me. Everyone has different tastes and feelings, so make sure to listen to what will make your smile and breathe a little easier. I hope these help throughout this semester and even after that.
1. this is me trying, Taylor Swift
As soon as the folklore tracklist came out, I knew I would love this one. And as I am currently trying my best to balance classes, seeing friends, extracurriculars and simply living through a pandemic, I feel like this song really works. It’s comforting because you feel like you are going through the same struggle as Taylor through the lyrics, which you may very well be. Makes you feel less alone. At least you’re trying.
2. Rainbow, Kacey Musgraves
This song feels like a blanket, if that’s a good way of explaining it. It’s also a good trail walking song, it feels like you are swaying when you listen. It’s a heavy song that fades into a lighter, comfort tune. I always feel refreshed after hearing it. Just beautiful, honestly, and fits the skies we have been having in Canton. Listening to any song called “Rainbow” is probably a good self-care decision.
3. Woman, Kesha
If you are feeling down on yourself, go blast this song. Screaming along to the lyrics is very therapeutic, and by the end you will most likely feel like you can do anything. This song is a work of art anyway. The best compliment I’ve ever gotten was when someone said they think of me when this song comes on. Finding songs to scream to, with empowering messages, are an essential on a self-care playlist.
4. Beautiful Day, U2
This song is on my self-care playlist because of my mom. She is a huge U2 fan and has always played them in the car while I was growing up. A very important part of listening to music is what your personal connection to a song is. In your own self-care playlist, put a song that is meaningful to someone important in your life. This way you can feel connected to them, even if you are separated by time, space, work, COVID or anything.
5. Clean, Taylor Swift
This is my favorite song of all time. It’s about how the hard times make you stronger, and that even through the worst of it, you can make it out. This also just sounds so peaceful. Self-care is about doing something for yourself, so make sure your favorite songs and artists are all over your playlist. Also, if you ever have the chance to listen to Clean while standing in the rain, I highly recommend it.
