A Tale of Two Bands: Marcy and Sprawl

0

Hey, all you cool cats! Been looking for some new music in your life? Been looking for some music in your own backyard??? Look no further! I am here to give you a rundown of the performances this past weekend: a double-header show by Marcy AND Sprawl at Titus Mountain. Here it is… A Tale of Two Bands.

After an endless puke-filled bus ride, the last of the SLU buses arrived at Titus Upper Mountain – at approximately 11:00 a.m., but who really knew the time? Packing the lodge, bags flying everywhere, drinks already in hand, the struggle to put on ski boots began. Both Marcy and Sprawl could be seen on the stage in the front of the room, running through their sound checks. “Why so soon?,” I asked myself. Well, I was in for a surprise. After suiting up in my neon outfit, boots on feet and board in hand, I made my way onto the slopes. Little to my knowledge, as I was lollygagging in the warmth of the rain, Marcy was taking the stage! As soon as I heard, I stopped everything and made my way back into the lodge.

Mid-song, I came in! Henry Baker ’25 was rip-dipping it up on the stage. As the lead singer and one of the band’s guitarists, he was STELLAR! The band was electric to see and boogie into a smooth groove. Alex Tidd ’24 shreds the guitar apart! Oliver Bass ’27 kills those chords on the bass, literally! Their beloved drummer, Emmit Dayhoof ’26, sends the crowd WILD on the kit! Marcy is the band you want to see if you’re looking for dancing, indie, jams.

See them next at Pub 56 this upcoming Saturday, March 9!

When I was watching Marcy’s performance, I thought it couldn’t get any better. I ventured back outside to enjoy my time and get my tickets-worth of lift runs. Not long after, I was told that Sprawl was playing! How did I keep missing the memo? I took off my snowboard faster than ever to see this new and upcoming band play.

BAM! I was hit with the beautiful vocal serenade of lead singer Cati O’Neil ’25. Man, oh man, can Cati sing. I had only ever seen Sprawl at an occasional house show and never had the privilege of hearing Cati or saxophonist Cara Monteleone ’24 in the light they deserve. The blend of the saxophone added so well to the wicked licks of guitarist Will Rebhahn ’26 and the tasty tunes of bassist bass Malcolm Suarez ’25. Last, but most certainly not least, is the beatmaker, banger and breaker, Wesley Wyatt ’24.

Sprawl is a killer band to see for head-banging, grooving music. I couldn’t stop myself from dancing as soon as I started listening to both these bands perform. The groove took over yet again on this delightful day of student performances. Wowwwwweeeee, does SLU have some AWESOME student bands right now!? I am stoked to see them both perform at Battle of the Bands later in the semester… or potentially the rise of a new student band? Only time will tell.
