Do you like zombie movies? Or romantic comedies? Or criminal detective shows? If you answered yes to one or more of the previous questions then iZombie is the show for you. After only four episodes, this new show stands out, to online reviewers, and to myself, as a wonderfully unique and entertaining variation on the contemporary zombie craze. The main character is a young, driven medical resident ironically named Liv Moore (acted by Rose McIver). In the first episode she attends a boat party where the partygoers are transformed into zombies by a new synthetic drug. Most of the zombies end up dead, but Liv survives and quickly adapts to her new reality. Determined to pass as a human, she must consume brains in order to retain her personality, humanity and sanity.
In order satisfy her new dietary needs Liv takes a job at the morgue and dumps her fiancé for his own protection. At her new job her nerdy coworker, Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti, quickly discovers what she is and begins searching for a cure. When Liv eats a brain she takes on the characteristics of the person it belongs to and absorbs some of their memories. Each personality transformation is wonderfully acted, unique, and very entertaining. My favorite so far is the romantic, impulsive artist’s brain that has Liv lusting after every attractive man and woman she sees. Liv quickly realizes that the visions can be used for good, and begins working to solve crimes with a homicide detective who believes that she is psychic.
My only qualm about iZombie is that it is somewhat hard to believe that no one other than Dr. Ravi catches on to her transformation, considering that she is incredibly pale with sunken eyes and inhuman strength. However, much like the typical CW show, iZombie has the combination of drama, action, and romance that will keep you on your toes throughout each episode. This new show stands apart as the first of its kind, and I would definitely recommend that everyone give it a shot (on Tuesday at 9pm).
