Los Angeles- At a crowded press conference earlier this morning, Werner Herzog announced that he had signed on to direct the third installment of the Avengers film series, presently titled Avengers: Infinity War, and that he, himself had written the script. The announcement came as a surprise to many as this will be Herzog’s first time directing a blockbuster movie. Herzog is better know for his art house films and is renowned for his detailed explorations of the extremes of human existence in both his fiction films, such as Aguirre: The Wrath of God, and in his documentaries, such as Grizzly Man. When asked why he took on such a different project from his usual films, Herzog said that he hoped to challenge himself by “going beyond the extremes of humanity into the realm of the superhuman.” When asked about his hopes for the film, he said that he wants “to show the members of the Avengers at their most vulnerable and intense, and to explore the cavernous depths of their private human experiences.” Marvel Studios released script details for the film shortly after the press conference. Anderson’s script calls for Iron Man to have an internal struggle to decide where the machine ends and the man begins, and Hulk to undergo anger management therapy at a Buddhist retreat in the Himalayas only accessible for two months out of the year. Meanwhile, Thor and Loki are to raft the entire Amazon to develop bonds of brotherhood while Captain America goes on a tour of European World War I battlefields and begins to question his staunch nationalist attitudes.When asked for details regarding the script, especially about the lack of any apparent villain, Herzog cryptically answered by saying only, “All villains are internal. Our hope is to explore the ocean of the superhuman soul and seek out the monsters living in their depths.”
