Upon discovering an artist whose genre is labeled “Bedroom Pop,” I was skeptical as to what kind of music I was about to listen to. Cavetown is fronted by 19-year-old Robin Skinner, a boy from Cambridge, England.
He started his career on YouTube, gaining fame by covering popular songs on the ukulele. His later music, however, is more interesting and genre-bending. “Lemon Boy,” released in January of 2018, is a compelling blend of relaxing vocals and unexpected backbeats, creating a perfect conglomeration of songs to listen to when studying or walking around campus.
The album starts off with its titular song, “Lemon Boy.” Its beat is light and airy, lulling the listener into a false sense of acoustic catharsis. The lyrics are slightly eccentric, using an abundance of garden terminology that would resonate with any St. Lawrence student. About halfway through the song, the beat drops, and a nice tripping cadence ensues for the duration of the piece.
Many other songs on this album employ the same theme, including the obligatory breakup song “Green” and “10 Feet Tall.”
Others are far more introspective, such as “Another One of Those Days,” where he describes the many dreams and fantasies that he never sees come to fruition.
“Lemon Boy” certainly has its flaws, but as a new artist, Cavetown is definitely making a mark on the alternative/pop scene. It will be interesting to see just where this young artist takes his signature sound.
