The Hill News Editorial Board would like to take some time and space to formally condemn the hate crimes that have happened on campus this past weekend. The vandalism of safe spaces on campus meant to foster and promote diversity is an abhorrent display of fear and only serves to promote injustice. It takes boldness and courage to present oneself as their honest self in public. Those who take physical or emotional action against that courage only harm social progress. Hate speech, especially slurs, cannot and will not be tolerated by any means. We believe in the freedom of expression, but choosing to use that right to rile fear within a community has no place at St. Lawrence University and serves no benefit to our community. This campus is a space dedicated to inclusivity where speech should be used to support. For anyone wishing to express their grievances, we encourage you to find better means than belittling others and inciting hate on campus. There are services, like Student Life and the Health Center, that are dedicated to your needs and how to service those needs to the best of their abilities. There are publications, like The Hill News, the Laurentian Magazine, or the Underground, where you can freely express yourself in a processed and concentrated manner. As publications, we are here to facilitate your words to the wider community, allowing discussion and debate freely, without inciting physical attacks or shouting obscenities. Anyone can use these platforms and facilities to express themselves and their opinions, and we encourage them to do so. Scan the QR code below for on-campus resources.
