Canton local and registered yoga teacher Kelly Newman Burnham has opened a new joint yoga studio and juice bar in downtown Canton.
Previously known as Sposa Bella, a formal dress shop, 81 Main Street has now reopened as Flying Lotus Yoga Center & Juice Bar.
Burnham describes her new endeavor on her Facebook business page as a “center for all things yoga.
From Hatha and aerial yoga to organic raw drinks, we are here to support the community in optimum health.”
The Flying Lotus will have classes taught by five different teachers.
Burnham describes her mission as “to take yoga off the mat and into our daily lives with authenticity, honesty, and integrity.”
“Yoga classes will be on the ground floor while the juice bar will be on the lower level,” reports Susan Mende for the Watertown Daily Times.
“The juice bar will offer fresh juices, smoothies, smoothie bowls and protein bites that fit the dietary needs of those who are gluten free, vegan, vegetarian or allergen sensitive. Dairy options will be available for the smoothies and smoothie bowls. Coffee also may be available.”
According to the Watertown Daily Times, Burnham previously worked as an educator in Canton before beginning this new project.
She was a Middles teacher at the Little River Community School for nine years, as well as working for a year at Canton Central School.
“The aerial yoga style she will feature at the studio involves specially made hammocks suspended from iron bars allowing students to invert themselves in various positions,” reports North Country Now’s Adam Atkinson.
“The style, inspired by iyengar yoga, will provide good traction to try to alleviate things like low back pain, and allow non weight-bearing handstand positions.”
St. Lawrence students seem to be intrigued and eager to support this new local Canton business, as many students often look for ways to try different eateries outside of campus.
Emily Grudzien ’21 is one of those excited students, saying, “it would be nice to have a variety of healthy eating spots in Canton, because the only real options sometimes are Sergis and Five Guys. It will be nice to have a healthier option, which might help make campus healthier and my fellow students happier.”
“I think that it will motivate students to get off campus and into the community more,” Grudzien added. “Even something as simple as taking a yoga class with Canton community members could help forge relationships that are beneficial to our St. Lawrence community and the lives of individual students.”
