Home Away From Home Dinner

International House and Common Ground Connections will host their traditional “Home Away From Home” dinner on the Friday of Laurentian Weekend, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. In recent years, this event has been a staple of St. Lawrence University’s Laurentian Weekend as the campus festivities ramp up with alumni and relatives of students.

One of the current I-House coordinators Muhammad Mahdi Alkhaqani ’26 invites everyone to this event.  “Home Away From Home Dinner is meant to be a gathering and open dinner for all individuals, locals or internationals, families or students,” Alkhaqani says. “The whole point of the Home Away from Home Dinner is to create a community so that nobody feels left out.”

Organizations such as African Student Union, La Casa, La Sociedad, The Hub, Asia Club, Dub, Greenhouse, Campus Kitchens, Black Student Union, Java, and Habitat for Humanity are contributing with dishes this year. The Thelmothesian Society, Wellness Office, Global Studies, Environmental Studies, Islamic Culture Club, and Diversity Equity and Inclusion Office are contributing monetarily.

Fellow I-House Coordinator Sharia Neha ’27 appreciates collaborating with other university organizations for this event. “We’re getting sushi, Indian food, and pizza, along with cultural dishes from student organizations, so it’s going to be a really nice mix of different cuisines and a lot of food for everyone,” says Neha. The thoughtfulness behind having such a varied range of cuisines ensures that all attendees find a piece of home during the dinner.
