Women’s Soccer Dominates SUNY CantonWomen’s Canton
Zoe Rogan ’27 scored three goals for her first career hat trick to lead the St. Lawrence University women’s soccer team to a 7-0 win at SUNY Canton on Tuesday night.
The Saints dominated the entire field, outshooting the Roos 38-3 with three goals in the first half and four more, including all three by Rogan, in the second half.
The Saints have featured a suffocating defense this season, only allowing three goals in five games. However, the offense has struggled to click, with just four goals scored prior to Tuesday night’s game.
Madison King-Thurber ’26 started the scoring four minutes in after Kaitlyn Barton ’26 sent a through ball up the middle.
Five minutes later, the Saints had a scoring chance with a 2-on-1, but the shot sailed just over the crossbar. The Saints had two more chances 2-on-1 within the next five minutes but missed just wide left both times.
The Saints extended the lead to 2-0 in the 18th minute when Barton centered a pass to Meredith Donahue ’26, who was able to finish it.
Barrett Freeman ’27 scored the last goal of the first half after making great move from the sideline, driving to the net and shooting it between the near post and the goalie.
At halftime, the Saints had a 13-1 edge in shots on goal, with SUNY Canton’s singular shot coming from near midfield.
Saints’ first-year head coach Dima Kaliakin has emphasized defense this season; the Saints started their pre-season by organizing their defense and have continued to work on it in every practice. “It takes all 11 players and its part of our DNA as a team,” said Kaliakin.
Just 30 seconds into the second half, Lily Pleau ’26 sent a beautiful pass across the middle to Rogan’s feet, and Rogan put it over the goalie’s shoulder into the top right corner. “We’ve been practicing these types of passes a lot in practice, but this was the first time I’ve successfully finished one during a game,” said Kaliakin. The assist was the first of two from Pleau in her first game back from injury.
Rogan drew a penalty in the box and converted on the penalty shot for her second of the game in the 57th minute. Aver Asom ’29 increased the lead to 6-0 in the 86th minute, converting on a pass by Pleau, and Rogan completed the hat trick with a deep strike from beyond the 18-yard box that sailed into the top corner of the net with less than two minutes to play.
Mackenzie Ryan ’28 made 18 saves for the Roos, while Zoe Davenport ’27 and Reagan Murphy ’28 split time in net for the Saints, both making one save to post a team shutout.
The Saints, now 3-1-2 on the season, host Cortland at 3 p.m. on Saturday as part of Laurentian Weekend festivities.
