Saints Travel to Allentown to Play In Four-Match Tournament
On Friday, Sept. 12, the St. Lawrence Volleyball team left campus at 9a.m. to depart for their two matches against Cedar Crest College and Muhlenberg College, the two opponents they would face later that evening.
At 5p.m. on Friday evening, the Saints started their weekend off strong against Cedar Crest Falcons, winning 3-1. Outside hitter Araiza Acum-Santos ’27 led the Saints with nine kills, while Sofia Velasquez ’26 and Rose Meihaus ’26 had seven each, respectively.
“Both on and off the court, our energy spiked, and we started to have fun, which led to a dub,” said Meihaus.
Later that evening, the Saints battled against the Muhlenberg College Mules, losing 0-3. Acum-Santos contributed eight kills, while Bridget Gammons ’28 had 4. The Saints trailed the first half of the first set 2-7, expressing that by the time they started “competing,” it was too late to catch up.
As the Saints finished up Friday split 1-1, they came in Saturday fired up to play the William Peace Pacers and the Hunter College Hawks.
The first game of the second day started off intensely, as the Pacers took the first set 25-14, presumably expecting an easy 3-0 win over the Saints.
However, in the second set, the Saints came back determined and finished a marathon of a set 30-28, clinching the win with an ace from Vanessa Latam ’27.
The Saints led the third set the entire time, with a score of 25-20, but the Pacers bounced back and dominated the fourth 25-13.
The fifth set began as a battle, but the Pacers ultimately took over and finished the fifth set 15-12.
“We excelled in the games that we won and struggled in the games that we lost, with not a lot of middle ground,” said Maggie Layman ’26. “We figured out what kind of grit we need to compete with Liberty League competition and are excited to bring that when we see them in two weeks.”
Determined from the five-set marathon, the Saints finished their two-day tournament with a bang, as they beat the Hawks 3-1.
“We did a great job showing up for each other and turning chaos into execution,” commented Velasquez.
The Saints will be back in action in the Burkman Gymnasium Saturday, Sept. 20, to host the Castleton Spartans at 11 a.m., and the SUNY Potsdam Bears at 3p.m.
