Saints Start Conditioning to Prepare For Liberty League Match-Ups

 Some people think basketball starts in the winter. However, for the women’s basketball team, it starts the second week back at St. Lawrence University. The early mornings, lifts at 5 p.m., and semiweekly practices mean that the season has begun. Conditioning is not a new concept to the team but this year it feels more important than ever. The team’s goal is to be in shape, play fast and execute well. To be in shape and play fast, the team rises early Mondays and Wednesdays, entering the basketball court at 6:20 a.m. without touching a basketball. If anyone else is up at that hour, all you will hear as you run by the gym is girls yelling, “We got it! Let’s go!” accompanied by some sort of hype music to help them forget they are up before the sun. 

Along with these conditionings, the NCAA put in place a new rule that the team is allowed eight practices before the official season starts on Oct. 15. These practices have already started for the Saints. 

One way that these Saints have gotten through these conditionings, practices and lift while keeping their spirits high is their team chemistry. Women’s basketball can be described in three words: loud, energetic and family. The team spends as much time on the court as they do off. They enjoy each other’s company at Dana Dining Center getting food after a long two-hour practice. They spend time in the Sullivan Student Center, saying they’re going to do work and eventually they end up talking for hours. Either way the team finds a way to get closer every day, making each practice filled with energy and fun. They are hoping to make a playoff run this year and be a contender for the
