What is International Education Week?

0

Every November, St. Lawrence University joins campuses across the country in celebrating International Education Week (IEW)—a time dedicated to exploring culture, language and the value of global learning.

As a senior, I’ve had the opportunity to experience IEW in various ways over the years, from helping lead a short language session my first year to simply enjoying the variety of events that bring our campus together now. What I have always loved most is how the week’s events transform our familiar space—such as Dana, the Winston Room, and even the Student Center, into hubs of cultural exchange.

What Is International Education Week? IEW is a nationwide initiative created by the U.S. Departments of State and Education to highlight the importance of international learning and cultural exchange. At SLU, the initiative is organized by International Student Services (ISS) and the Center for International and Intercultural Studies (CIIS). Student clubs and organizations, along with academic departments, also contribute to the success of the week by organizing and sponsoring events.

What is the purpose behind it? At its core, IEW celebrates the ways students from around the world shape our campus. It is a chance to learn from one another, whether through food, music, language, or storytelling. It also reminds us that global education is not only about studying abroad, but also about understanding and connecting across cultures right here in Canton.

Events to Look Out For! This year’s lineup includes some long-time favorites and a few new additions. Some notable events other than the ones on the CIIS corner include:

15-Minute Language Sessions in the Winston Room from 12-2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18, where you can learn a few new words and phrases in different languages.

Flavors from Around the World in Dana Dining Hall, featuring meals inspired by international cuisines during lunch on Friday, Nov. 14, and Monday, Nov. 17, through Thursday, Nov. 20.

Why It Matters? Each event, no matter how small, reflects SLU’s openness to learning from one another. Whether you’re teaching a few words in your language, trying a dish you have never had before, or just chatting with someone from a different background, IEW reminds us that these moments of exchange make our campus stronger.
