Peak Weekend!!! October 10-12
We here at 58 Park Street are hosting a super epic opportunity for those looking to spend quality time hiking in the Adirondack Mountains next weekend. Yes, that’s right: Oct. 10-12 is the 43rd annual Peak Weekend! Since 1982, our goal has been to have St. Lawrence University students summit each of the 46 mountains above 4,000 feet in Northern New York. This year, YOU have the opportunity to help us reach our peakin’ goal!
This is also a special time for the trees that will surround you on your hike, as they are reaching their peak color. With the hills awash in hues of orange and red, who wouldn’t want to participate? The answer is nobody—there are trips available for all levels of experience and stoke. Each peak has its own unique set of challenges, ranging from scree fields to thick forests to bottomless mud pits, although these are just examples of the more rugged ADK terrain.
Whichever trip you decide on, you are sure to have an unforgettable adventure (it’s the OC guarantee). Many of these mountains also have gorgeous summit views of the expansive Adirondacks. Not a huge hiker or just getting into it? Not a problem! We have a selection of easier hikes, including St. Regis (not a 46-er, but has a fire tower and some sick views), Lower Wolfjaw (this does include some scrambling…), and Street and Nye (no real views, but a pretty straightforward trek). If you’re looking to push yourself, we also have a number of challenging hikes! This includes a selection of trips with high mileage, high elevation gain, and both! There are trips spread throughout the weekend, Friday through Sunday, with a mix of both day trips and overnights.
Does this sound interesting? Do you want to join us next weekend (the 10-12 of Oct.)? Join us, won’t you? Sign-ups are next Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Enchanted Forest (between Park St. and Richardson). Many trips have limited spots and will fill up quickly, so make sure to be there promptly. House members will introduce our hikes, mileage and elevation, as well as which day(s) we will be in the mountains. It is then up to you to decide which peak you would like to hike or which house member you’d like to spend time with. No matter where you end up peakin’, it will absolutely be memorable.
Last year, I–as a first-year, non-House member–chose the Santanoni range, which includes Santanoni, Panther and Couchsachraga. After a night spent eating campfire-roasted pork chops, we began the trek early in the morning. The hike was more of a scramble up muddy bedrock, clinging to pine boughs to haul ourselves up. However, we only summitted Santanoni and Panther, and not Couchsachraga, the dang 46th peak. This year, I am returning with a vengeance: we’ll be eating some sick trail food, hackying some sack, and bagging all three peaks.
See ya Wednesday for signups!
