Saints Volleyball Beats SUNY Canton
Saints Win Against Roos in Four-Set Match
Vanessa Latam ’27 posted 30 assists and added eight kills to lead the St. Lawrence University volleyball team to a come-from-behind 24-26, 25-18, 25-20, 25-14 win over SUNY Canton at the Ronald T. Burkman Gymnasium last Tuesday night.
SLU dominated the entire fourth set, exploding for an 11-2 run to turn a 5-4 lead into a nearly insurmountable 16-7 advantage. Latam had seven assists, two kills and a block in the deciding set.
Runs were crucial to the Saints’ success. “A big part of our scouting report in conversation was that when (SUNY Canton outside hitter Emerson Coulter) was back row, that we were really going to look to make a run”, said Head Coach Shelly Roiger. Coulter was the Roos’ leading hitter with 11 kills.
The Roos opened the first set on a 4-0 run, but the Saints quickly answered with a five-point run of their own to take a 7-6 lead.
The rest of the set was back and forth until the Roos won three straight points to post a 26-24 win and take a 1-0 lead.
The Saints broke the second set open with a 7-0 run to turn a one-point deficit into a 15-9 lead. The lead held, and SLU evened up the match to one set apiece.
“We didn’t come out very energetic, which we usually don’t on weekday games,” said Roiger, who noted that she was happy with how her team responded after the first set.
The Saints got a good start to the third set, opening with a quick 5-0 lead. Another huge run put them up 14-6, and they continued to cruise, leading 21-15 before the Roos came roaring back with a five-point run of their own. SLU responded and closed out the set with the next four points to take a 2-1 lead through three sets.
After splitting their opening Liberty League matches on the road last weekend, beating RIT 3-1 before falling to William Smith 3-0, the Saints will face Clarkson in Potsdam on Tuesday before hosting Skidmore on Friday at 6 p.m.
The Saints jump to 9-4 on the season and extend their win streak to 4, while the Roos drop to 6-10. The teams will meet again on Nov. 7 before conference tournaments start.
