Before I left home to begin my sophomore year, I was gifted a DoorDash gift card by a close family friend. While this was a generous gift, I was later perplexed when thinking about DoorDashing in Canton, NY. I had never considered it before. Besides, I have my own car on campus, so I am used to driving anywhere I want to get food for myself and friends. I was not even sure DoorDashing was a thing in this area, but it sure is.
In fact, many students that I spoke with use the app and find it very helpful, especially those with no car on campus. Currently, McDonald’s, 7-Eleven, KFC, Parlor’s Pizza, Dollar General, and Pizza Hut are some of the places that offer delivery orders. While many students have reported easy and quick deliveries, others have had some issues with the app. One student I spoke with had issues ordering last year while living in Priest Hall, saying that the dashers could never find the dorm.
So, is being a dasher here worth it? Sophomore student Simone Routledge ’27 believes it is. She spoke very highly of her experience with past deliveries. She described it as “a really easy way to earn money in this area.” She explained that it does not feel like work at all, driving around with your friends listening to music while delivering orders. Simone showed me that you can deliver by time or by offer. With the offer option, you have more flexibility when you want to work. She also described the job as really safe, as that may be a concern for some people who are considering DoorDashing.
I had assumed that most of the DoorDash orders would be coming from St. Lawrence and SUNY Canton. However, Simone explained that has not been the case in her experiences. Almost all of the orders she has done have been for residents of Canton and Potsdam, rather than college students. She explained that she thinks the reasoning is that she mostly does DoorDashes during the day, and students are probably more likely to DoorDash at night. It definitely does seem convenient after a night out.
I tried it myself this past weekend, ordering from McDonald’s. I received the food relatively quickly and had no issues with the program or delivery. So, even a small town like Canton can have a very efficient DoorDash system that is definitely worth considering.

Paid to drive around with friends, explore the area and college are. You can do it by time or offer. One McDonald’s . Different fast food. Very easy system, very beginner friendly. Expecting to be SLU students, but not always. Although usually does it during the day. Because of the time of day. Really easy way to earn money in this area. Doesn’t feel like work at all. Really safe as well.
