SLU Athletes Bring Power of Pink to St. Lawrence
St. Lawrence athletics started the month of October by holding their annual “Power of Pink” campaign. The campaign, which lasted from October 2 to October 6, helped to raise over $2,000 for breast cancer. As in years past, all proceeds from the campaign will be donated to the Gouverneur Breast Cancer Fund.
Created in 2009, Power of Pink began as a non-profit organization to raise breast cancer awareness. Since then, the St. Lawrence Student-Athlete Advisory Committee(S.A.A.C.) has capitalized on the mission, holding the campaign every October to generate breast cancer awareness in the North Country. Money raised from shirt sales and home events will stay in St. Lawrence county, and through the Gouverneur Breast Cancer Fund, support those who are fighting against breast cancer.
Over the past week, representatives of S.A.A.C. volunteered to table at home athletic events at Soccer, Field Hockey, Football, and Hockey. During these times, shirts trademarking “saints supporting a cure” were available for sale. All student-athletes also had the opportunity to pre-order Power of Pink shirts to show their support and raise money.
The week started strong, with a win from Women’s Soccer over Plattsburgh on October 2. The winning streak continued with Women’s Hockey defeating Ohio State on October 4. Saturday(October 5) was jam-packed with wins from Field Hockey and Football to start the day. The day ended with hard fought games from Men’s Soccer, Men’s Hockey, and Women’s Hockey. Men’s Hockey earned their second win of the weekend against Canisius, to celebrate the final day of Power of Pink.
The campaign was once again a success in brining the St. Lawrence athletic community together to fundraise and bring awareness to breast cancer. Up next on the S.A.A.C schedule is a tentative plan to bring back Special Olympics for the first time post-covid. The E-Board is currently in the early stages of planning this event, set to be held in December 2024, and is excited to hit the ground running to unify the community in the spirit of athletics.
