SLU’s Tribute to 9/11

0

St. Lawrence University continues to remember September 11, 19 years later through traditions new and old. 2,996 flags are placed on the quad to honor each live lost and remain up the entire day. SLU Republicans started the tradition about ten years ago. SLU Democrats began to help to set up the tribute in the following years, and other on-campus organizations have also been involved.

This remembrance is especially important to the St. Lawrence community as five victims were alumni: Robert J. “Bobby” Coll ’88, Catherine Gorayeb ’82, Christopher Morrison ’89, Michel A. “Mike” Pelletier ’88 and Richard H. “Richie” Stewart Jr. ’89. There are separate flags dedicated to these Laurentians. Last year, a new tradition of ringing the chapel bells at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m. and 10:03 a.m. was started by two members of the class of 2023, Giavanna Ragon and Sarah Stowell, according to St. Lawrence University Communications. This year, the chapel bells will ring at 11 a.m., according to University Chaplain Shaun Whitehead. Those on campus are also able to light a candle in the chapel. A organ concert recording, performed by Musician-In-Residence Sondra Goldsmith Proctor and Abigail Evans ’20, will be available on the Chaplain’s office website.
