What’s New on Netflix for the Month of April
It looks like Netflix’s algorithm did it again this month, providing us with exactly the content we wanted for the month of April. So rather than being creeped out by the fact that the streaming service knows us better than we know ourselves, why not dive into these shows and movies that are perfect for a rainy (or sunny) day.
MOVIES
“All the President’s Men” (1976)
Dustin Hoffman stars in this political flick about the Watergate scandal and the reporters who worked to uncover it. Nothing like watching a movie about the good guys taking down a shady politician to let us escape from the reality of the good guys trying to take down a shady politician.
“Pineapple Express” (2008)
Seth Rogen wrote and starred in this stoner-buddy comedy about two burnouts who witness a murder and manage to make an entire gang of drug dealers want to kill them. It is pure, simple, violent, raunchy fun and it offers a chance for viewers to see James Franco rock shoulder length hair. Watch it with your friends, not your parents.
“A Quiet Place” (2018)
This movie is about a couple stuck in a bad marriage. Things have gotten so tense that the pair hardly talk anymore. Just kidding. They don’t talk because if they make a single sound, a group of aliens with incredible hearing will surely track down and kill the entire family. This is a thrilling movie, starring Emily Blunt and Jim from the Office. John Krasinski actually directed the movie as well, proving that Jim was in fact destined for bigger and better things than working at Dunder Mifflin.
“Spy Kids” (2001)
“Spy Kids” provides an injection of nostalgia for anyone looking to ward off the real world for an hour-and-a-half. This is a fun movie about child superspies who go on a mission to track down their missing parents. The lighthearted flick includes thumb-people, a scary yet loveable uncle played by Danny Trejo and a villain with an egg-headed sidekick. It is perfect for the whole family, or just college kids who miss the good old days.
“The Hateful Eight” (2015)
Quentin Tarantino’s eighth movie is aptly named, but hits a little too close to home for anyone residing in the frozen tundra of Canton, N.Y.. The plot involves a group of strangers who are stuck in a rural cabin during a blizzard. Gradually, the tension builds thanks to signature Tarantino dialogue, and great acting by Samuel L. Jackson. Obviously there is plenty of violence and murder, and the film is way too relatable for anyone who has wanted to kill their roommate during a St. Lawrence winter.
TV SHOWS
“New Girl”
Fans of the comedy about a quirky girl who lives with four male roommates will rejoice that the seventh season of this sitcom was just added to the streaming service. The show picks up where it left off with funny banter, plenty of awkward shenanigans and is a fun experience for anyone looking to waste an hour or two.
“Our Planet”
For those interested in a soothing voice discussing the mysteries and idiosyncrasies of our homeland, look no further. David Attenborough narrates this documentary series that follows in the footsteps of “Planet Earth,” the previous Attenborough narrated nature series. While it can drag on – as there is only so much that people want to learn about the mating habits of an emu – it is definitely packed with crazy facts and information about the earth.
“Quicksand”
This crime series follows a high school student on trial for murder. Definitely great for relieving stress about a recent J-board or upcoming finals, as you realize it could always be worse. This Swedish crime drama has been making waves ever since it was released on Netflix for its look at hot-button issues like school shootings and other delicate subject material.
