Environmental Tip of the Week

In addition to recycling services, St. Lawrence University offers organic waste diversion. In layman’s terms, this just refers to the use of composting containers. Composting is the practice of turning organic waste into fertilizer for soils.

At SLU, all organic waste collected in the containers is brought to a composting operation center by the stables. After decomposition is complete, the compost is used as a fertilizer throughout campus.

Compost is also available for pick up, free of charge at the center. It should primarily be used for gardening, but we’re sure you can get creative with it.

What you CAN COMPOST includes: all fruits and vegetables, bread, eggshells, tea bags, coffee filters and grounds and french fries.

What you CANNOT COMPOST includes: meats/fish, dairy products (including cheese), pasta/rice, soups, fats, oils, grease and industrial compostable items (e.g. cups, single-use silverware).

When you compost, you can help not only the environment, but maybe your garden too. Get composting today, Saints!
