Springfest Recap!
A Night of Music & Fun for Students
In case you live under a rock, the biggest event of St. Lawrence University’s spring semester took place this past Saturday. The annual Springfest concert returned on somewhat of a gloomy day. Hey, at least it was not snowing! The Association of Campus Entertainment secured a solid group of performers this year, including Stolen Gin and A$AP Ferg, the latter of which was a last minute replacement for NLE Choppa.
Despite the less than stellar weather, students showed up to enjoy live music and celebrate the nearing end of the semester. Student band, Loose Leaf, who won Battle of the Bands last week, kicked off the night in an exciting way. I thought that the band sounded great on the big stage and definitely got the crowd excited for the night. They played many classic songs, including “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” and “Love Shack,” with noticeably more excitement. I found their set was fun to dance to and were a good representation of the talent here at SLU.
Indie rock outfit, Stolen Gin, took the stage next. Their groovy tunes delighted students and in my opinion, were a good choice for an opener. One student, Justin Galarza ’27, said that “their set was fire,” and despite not knowing them before the show, they caught his attention. I thought that they had a good variety of instruments and sounds in each song. Phoebe Jones ’27 said that she was “impressed by the saxophonist and he got the whole crowd grooving.” Some students even enjoyed Stolen Gin more than the main act. Others were not expecting Stolen Gin to be as good as they were. “There wasn’t as much hype in the promo for Stolen Gin, even though they performed longer than A$AP Ferg,” Ally Dettor ’26 stated. I felt that the unique mix of covers and original songs suited them well.
After a bit of a wait, and a lengthy introduction from his DJ, A$AP Ferg finally entered the stage. I was pretty close to the front and had a good view of the artists, so I feel that I had a good perspective of the show. Regardless of how much you know about Ferg, you cannot deny that he got the crowd hype. The common consensus seems to be that everyone enjoyed his set but found it a bit disappointing that it only lasted around forty minutes. Galarza said that “Ferg was so heat. I know a lot of people were upset that he only played a few songs, but I think the ones he performed brought good energy.” Ferg performed crowd pleasers such as “Shabba,” “Dreams, Fairytales, Fantasies,” and of course “Plain Jane.” Another student, Emma Rubin ’27, said that Ferg “had a fun performance, but the set was shorter than I expected.” Many felt that Ferg made up for the short setlist with his captivating stage presence. “Even though I didn’t know many of his songs, he had good crowd work,” said Jolie Osborne ’27. Overall, most agree that Ferg was entertaining. And let’s be real, after “Plain Jane,” was there really anything else any of us wanted to see?
