Is SLU Funk Funked Out?

0

SLU Funk, a staple of St. Lawrence University’s music scene, has been performing for audiences for over a decade, known for its lively mix of funk, soul and R&B. As the semester winds down, speculation and rumors mount regarding the future of the band.

“Each group of students brings their preferences, their own choices, and the structure of the band allows that change to be reflected in what we play,” says band director Larry Boyette, noting the collaborative nature that defines SLU Funk. This collaboration has been integral to the band’s changes over the years, tracing back to the early 2000s when the music department was experimenting with various new ensemble types. Under Boyette’s guidance, it transformed from its initial Motown-focused style to the vibrant funk-infused music of today.

Although the band has made impressive progress, speculation about its return next semester has arisen. “The future of SLU Funk is uncertain,” admits Boyette. With seven graduating seniors, the band faces the challenge of filling many spots with few interested students. “We have a tight-knit group, but finding new members who are dedicated and share our passion for music is essential for the band’s continuation,” he says.

One downside of the band’s potential end is the impact on events where the band performs, particularly the Java Barn. “If SLU Funk does not return next semester, that’ll cut a SLU Funk show at Java, and I know Java’s budget’s been pretty tight, and that’s one that we don’t have to pay for,” says Cara Montele- one ’24, a member of both SLU Funk and Java. The two groups collaborate frequently throughout the semesters, mutually benefiting each other. “There aren’t many student bands anymore,” says Monteleone. SLU Funk is one of the few on campus.

As the band’s potential final semester, members reflect on their experiences. “SLU Funk has been a journey filled with memorable experiences and rewarding moments,” says Lucy Alberecht ’27, recalling the energy and excitement shared during performances, particularly at Java, where the crowd’s appreciation for the music creates a special connection. “Being involved with this ensemble during my time at SLU was a very memorable and rewarding experience as a musician,” says graduating senior Emily Boswell ’24. As the band faces an uncertain future, these reflections show how much SLU Funk has meant to its members, leaving behind treasured memories and valuable experiences.

SLU Funk’s next performance will be at the Underground on April 26 for Festival Day.
