CA Social Council Puts on Valentine’s Day Festival

Valentine’s Day can be an awkward holiday for some. Clicking through the seemingly endless Instagram stories from couples posting about their perfect partner can be a not-so-subtle reminder to singles as to what they’re missing out on.

If you find yourself in this camp, you’re not alone, and the CA Social Council wants to help with that. This Valentine’s Day, they put on a Valentine’s Day Festival in the Winston Room of the Student Center. The event was not aimed at catering to cute couples and perfect matches, but rather just kids looking for something social to do on a holiday they would otherwise feel rather left out of.

The CA Social Council put on the event in collaboration with several groups on campus. One group present was the Performance Art Collective, a sub-group of the Arts Annex. The group was doing Taro card readings and having plenty of laughs with the crowd.

Another group present was, of course, ACE, who was doing cookie decorating, and making sure everyone was having a good time. Other groups were making bracelets and playing Jenga, complete with “get to know you” questions.

A member of the CA Social Council, Nadiana Acevedo said, “That’s our goal today, to get kids on campus to be more social, and to be more involved in things that don’t involve drinking. It’s just for people to socialize and have a good time.”

The event was a welcome relief from the already busy semester. Having a social event without drinking created a much more inviting atmosphere where the people around you were there to talk to new people, and not just to party—although there was plenty of embarrassing dancing going on.

So, if you’re single out there, or maybe just trying to put yourself out there a bit more, be on the lookout for these events. They are the perfect place to meet new people and have a good time without any pressure, and, in this case, the perfect place to remember that even if you didn’t get a rose or a box of chocolate, you can still have a fun on Valentine’s Day.
