Spotify Viral 50 is a new kind of playlist that features songs not based on most number of times played, but rather how often the tracks are shared throughout the web. These are the top three songs for the week:
1. Lola Marsh – “Sirens”
I usually like to say that my top picks in any list are in no particular order, but let me be clear and say that this song is without a doubt the top song this week. Do you like Lana del Rey, First Aid Kit, or Edward Sharpe? Trick question – the answer should be yes. This song is the sexiest possible combo of all three of those artists in one place. This track is also the only one by Lola Marsh on Spotify…i.e. you are welcome for the free ticket to hipsterdom.
2. Death
Cab for Cutie – “Little Wanderer”
Yeah, Death Cab for Cutie is back! They released this track’s album last week, their first production in a couple of years. It is more of the same Death Cab that we all secretly love from their 2005 effort, Plans, but it also shows the same level of maturity that Modern Vampires of the City did for Vampire Weekend. Plus, the record is an insight as to why we liked Death Cab in the first place: lead singer Ben Gibbard sounds a little bit like Neil Young!
3. GTA – “Red Lips” (feat. Sam Bruno)
Campy is the adjective that immediately comes to mind for describing this song. In “Red Lips,” GTA has produced an intense mix of mystifying vocals and a dominatingly rough beat drop. In the spirit of Baauer’s “One Touch,” the only things lacking from this song are some perplexingly indiscernible raps from Rae Sremmurd’s Lee and Jimmy. Even if you are not a huge fan of trap music, this single seems to be just the right length, representing a perfect daily serving of motivating house music.
