With a 11-8-6 record coming into the weekend, the Lady Saints were looking for redemption against the Big Red of Cornell and Colgate. Despite many opportunities, the Saints were unable to put away the Big Red who were formerly ranked by the USCHO earlier this season.

In the first home game of 2010, the Saints got off to a quick start controlling much of the game and dictating the pace. After numerous scoring opportunities the Lady Saints finally capitalized on a chance as Assistant Captain Britni Smith ’10 ripped a slap shot from the point that beat the Cornell goaltender. “We’ve had a lot of great opportunities and are now consistently putting them away. I think that’s a big reason why we’re as competitive as we are now,” commented Assistant Captain Brittony Chartier ’10.

With a one goal lead, the Saints looked to build off of the momentum they carried in from the first period, mostly on the back of goaltender Maxie Weisz ’10. Weisz has seen a considerable hike in playing time and it has paid dividends for the Saints. Despite playing incredibly well, the Saints were unable to keep their lead, as Weisz was unable to stop a rebound shot from a beautiful save.

Entering the third period, the action was at a fevered pitch as both teams looked to take the lead. The Saints once again pulled ahead as Assistant Captain Courtney Sawchuk ’10 scored her first goal of the season. Assisting on the goal were Smith and Kelly Sabatine ’13. The assist was Smith’s 10th point in the last 15 games and was Sabatine’s 11th assist of the year.

With little time remaining and Chartier’s nearly unbeatable goal, it appeared as if the Saints had the game in hand. However, it was not meant to be, as Cornell scored with little time remaining using an extra attacker to equalize. Overtime ensued to no avail, as the game would end in a 2-2 tie. Weisz was solid in goal with 15 saves, and the same could be said of Chartier who had 17 saves.

“Hopefully Maxie and I can give the team what they need to win every week, I hope that they feel confident with us in goal,” commented Chartier, “These games are very difficult and we need to finish our opportunities, but we feel reassured with our results. We’ve played well and have always hung in there.”

On Saturday much of the same ensued as Chartier and Weisz combined for 17 saves in the Saints’ one-goal loss versus Colgate.  Scoring the lone goal for the Lady Saints was Michelle Ng ‘13 who took a pass from Kelly Sabatine at the blue line. Following a beautiful toe drag Ng was able to slip the puck past the Colgate goaltender. It was her 7th goal this season.

The Saints will next be in action this weekend against Union and Rensselaer.
